Early Thoughts on Pre-Release UFC 2009: Undisputed Demo

Well I’ve had the demo for about 48 hours now, and I think I’ve given it a decent amount of time to get a good idea of how it is, and can give a fair review. First off, I’d just like to say that this is going to be a great game. And by great, I mean eating up hours and hours of my time. The demo comes with two fighters, Chuck Liddell and Shogun. I’ve played a match with these two probably about 40 times. No two fights have ever looked the same yet.

Before I get too much farther, if you’re wondering how to get the early demo, run to your nearest Gamestop and pre order the game. Put $5 down and they have a limited amount of demo keys that you can use to redeem on XBox live. You may want to call in advance to make sure that they have some left. If you have a PS3 then I guess you’re out of luck. Until Thursday that is, when it gets released for everyone.

Anyway, back to the game here. The demo automatically starts you off in beginner mode, and after KOing my opponent by the second around about 5 times in a row, I became a bit worried that’s all this would be. I then checked the options and tuned it up to Advanced and hopped back in the game as Liddell. Figuring I could play like before I would come in with some spinning back fists and overhand rights waiting for that eventual KO. Except this time Shogun would continually shoot under my punches, put me on my back, pass all the way to mount and armbar as I squirmed helplessly underneath. I lost about 3 consecutive times before I figured I better go through the training mode.

The training itself is very detailed, possible a little too detailed. The training takes place in a cage that looks very similar to the ones you see on The Ultimate Fighter. The training goes over everything from how to walk to how to control your opponent’s head while he’s in the Muay Thai clinch.

After learning how to use rubber guard to sweep and control my opponent I decided to hop back in the game. I picked Chuck once again since I was used to his fighting style. I tried to bring the fight to Shogun by putting him on his back and giving him some ground and pound but he was easily able to sweep me and once again maintain top position and dominate me. Just like true to life, Chuck needs to stay on his feet. Once I began to play more of a Sprawl and Brawl style with him I found a lot more success, although if Shogun did get me down he still dominated me.

After losing a few more times I figured it was time to give Shogun a chance. 15 seconds in I noticed that this was nothing like playing with Chuck. Shogun didn’t have the big looping right hand or the power punches. Instead he was equipped with flying knees and a Muay Thai clinch. Very quickly however I found out I probably shouldn’t be standing with Chuck as he slipped inside one of my headkicks and blasted me in the face knocking me out.

The second time I try to shoot a lot more on Chuck but his takedown defense was very good. I paused the game and checked the move list and found that I could pull guard. I needed to bring Chuck to my world so I tied up in a clinch with him and put myself on my back. Now that he was in my world I put him in rubber guard, used an omoplata, and swept him to side control. From he I was able to mount and, even though Chuck was bucking, was able to get the TKO victory.

As you can see this game is much better than a lot of people expected. If anyone has any questions about it I’ll do my best to answer any of them I can. I would recommend this game to anyone who is on the fence. Don’t rent it, buy it!

UFC 97: Picks!

I only have a little bit until showtime so here are my quick picks for the event tonight.

Sam Stout vs. Matt Wiman

Ryo Chonan vs. T.J. Grant

Mark Bocek vs. David Bielkheden

David Loiseau Vs. Ed Herman

I like the Crow making a comeback, but Herman is probably one fight from being cut, and while Herman has recently lost in the UFC, he has been facing much better competition. I think he’ll have his hands full with Loiseau, but he should come out with the win.

Jason MacDonald Vs. Nate Quarry

Once again I like both fighters, but MacDonald really impressed me in that loss to Maia. Impressed me so much I’m picking him to beat on Quarry.

Denis Kang Vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokam

Via being known.

Eliot Marshall Vs. Vinicius Magalhaes

Via submission.

Steve Cantwell Vs. Luiz Cane

Cheick Kongo Vs. Antoni Hardonk
Via TKO.

Krzysztof Soszynski Vs. Brian Stann

Not sure why this is a main card fight. Both are sloppy, both aren’t good on the ground.

Chuck Liddell Vs. Mauricio Rua

Shogun will have an okay Round 1. He’ll then proceed to gas and lose the rest of the right until he is knocked out or loses the decision.

Anderson Silva Vs. Thales Leites

This fight is pointless. Leites stands less of a chance than Cote, and Silva may just get another win via telekinesis as Leites tries to get himself out of the cage.

Strikeforce: Frank Shamrock vs. Nate Diaz Picks

It’s only hours before fight time and I must say that I’m more excited for this card than the upcoming UFC 97. Let’s go ahead and get my picks out of the way here.

Brett “The Grimm” Rogers
vs. Ron Humphrey

In this fight I’m going to be going with Brett, not only because I am unfamiliar with Ron, but the fact that Brett has shown that he has very heavy hands, and judging by Ron’s record, he likes to stand and strike.

I’m a little concerned with Brett’s ground game since we haven’t got to see it yet, but I doubt this will be the fight to test him. I’d really like to see Brett face a good wrestler or submission expert, but I don’t know if Strikeforce will want to risk a potential star by feeding him to any wolves.

Gilbert Melendez
vs. Rodrigo Damm

I’m going to be picking Melendez in this fight due to the much tougher competition that he has faced. Gilbert has been able to win in Pride, Strikforce, WEC, and Shooto. Damm has fought in Sengoku and Bodog. I’ll be going with Melendez on experience alone.

Benji Radach vs. Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith

This fight has the potential to be fight of the night. Both love the stand up and both seemed to have really raised their game as of late. I believe Benji has the heavier hands and that’s why I’ll be picking him to be hand Smith a TKO loss tonight.

Scott is very skilled as he showed in his fights with Robbie Lawler and recently had a nice win over Terry Martin.

Benji recently had a nice win over “Ninja” Rua.

Christiane “Cyborg” Santos vs. Hitomi Akano

I’ll be picking Cyborg in this fight for multiples reasons. One is the fact that I think she’ll be the first to destroy Gina if Gina ever quits ducking her. Cyborg has shown a lot of skill in her fights dominating her opponent’s strength wise and with her striking.

The second reason I’m picking her is that she’ll be coming in with a large weight advantage. Not only is her opponent a natural 135er, Cyborg did not make weight. Last I checked Cyborg came in at 150.5. 5.5 pounds above the weight limit of 145.

The main thing Cyborg will want to do is keep it on the feet because her opponent knows how to finish fights by submission. Namely armbars. If Cyborg keeps it on her feet this should be a good win for her.

Frank Shamrock
vs. Nick Diaz

For anyone that hasn’t seen it you may want to check out the press conference for these two. All the fun starts at 3:16. Frank tears him apart here, just like I predict he’ll do in the cage. Frank’s not going to have trouble with Nick’s pitter patter punches and is well versed in the submission game.

Hopefully after Frank gets his win here he’ll get a rematch with Cung Le and get a shot at the middleweight belt.

I received my Jawzz Mouthguard Today

Posted by Chad C.

And I must say that I am very pleased with the final product.

Jawzz Mouthguard 1

It took a little longer then I expected to get it back, but I had great customer service when working with the Jawzz customer support. They always got back to me within 24 hours, and I really didn’t give them much detail with the design. I gave them a rough idea of what I wanted and they did the rest.

Jawzz Mouthguard 2

It fits great, but I haven’t been able to really try it out during training just yet. Separated clavicles sort of put a damper on that, but I should be able to get back in there soon!

Dana White Video Blog - Nashville

Just watch starting at 4:30. Classic Dana. That’s all I’m going to say about this one.

EDIT: Well it looks like the video has been taken down. Apparently people got a little worked up over Dana’s use of the F bomb about 50 times in 3 minutes or so.

MTV’s Bully Beatdown Episode 2

This episode was even better than the first as Michael Westbrook just completely dominates this bully.

MTV’s Bully Beatdown

I’m definately a huge “Mayhem” Miller fan so when I heard he had his own show on MTV I had to check it out.  Not quite hardcore MMA action, but entertaining none the less.  I’ll do my best to get the videos posted here when I remember.
